Prostate cancer was for so long a neglected health issue – neither understood by the public nor prioritised by politicians. By any dimension, prostate cancer simply didn’t register on the radar screen.

It was against this background that The Prostate Cancer Charity was set up in 1996. In its relatively short life, the Charity has played a key role in raising both public awareness of the disease and political debate about services and support… and there is now a real sense that for the cause of prostate cancer, the time has come.

We are the largest and most comprehensive of the charities focused specifically on prostate cancer. We aim to provide hope for tomorrow through the research that we fund – and practical support for today through our extensive – and growing – information services.

Over recent years we have invested nearly £5 million in vital medical research and supported thousands of men and their families. Our contact with so many people whose lives have been directly affected by prostate cancer, feeds into all we do, giving us a real breadth of knowledge to underpin our work.

Our vision is to achieve for men, in relation to prostate cancer, what has so successfully been achieved for women and breast cancer. Our goals are set out clearly in our five-year strategy, A Cause for Action.

I count it a real privilege to be part of a movement that is pioneering changes in the priority accorded to men’s health. We will be increasing our efforts over the coming months and years to ensure that prostate cancer is placed, and stays, where it belongs – on the national health agenda.

I want us to be key players in a movement for change, engaging men with prostate cancer, their families and friends, and all those with an interest in the disease, in securing significant improvements in services and support. We are here to make a difference. I do hope that you will find this website helpful, whatever your interest may be in prostate cancer… and, of course, we will always welcome

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting public health activities in the United States.

CDC?s focus is not only on scientific excellence but also on the essential spirit that is CDC – to protect the health of all people. CDC keeps humanity at the forefront of its mission to ensure health protection through promotion, prevention, and preparedness.

Composed of the Office of the Director, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and six Coordinating Centers/ Offices, including environmental health and injury prevention, health information services, health promotion, infectious diseases, global health and terrorism preparedness and emergency response, CDC employs more than 14,000 employees in 54 countries and in 170 occupations.

The goals of the agency are as follows:

Healthy People in Every Stage of Life by reducing health risks, at all stages of life, through the most efficient and effective means possible.

Healthy People in Healthy Places by ensuring the places we live, work, and play have safe, healthy environments.

People Prepared for Emerging Health Threats by safeguarding lives and responding to threats from mental health to environmental health.

Healthy People in a Healthy World by spearheading efforts to improve global health through medical technology, international coalitions, government interventions, and basic behavior changes.

To reach our goals, six strategic areas of focus have been established:

Health Impact Focus:Align CDC?s staff, strategies, goals, investments, and performance to maximize impact on the population’s health and safety.

Customer–centricity: Market what people want and need to choose health.

Public Health Research: Create and disseminate the knowledge and innovations people need to protect their health now and in the future.

Leadership: Leverage CDC?s unique expertise, partnerships, and networks to improve the health system.

Globalization: Extend CDC?s knowledge and tools to promote health protection around the world.

Accountability: Sustain people?s trust and confidence by making the most efficient and effective use of their investments in CDC.
